Over 1000 passionate, committed team members make up the Fenix team, and we want to give you a chance to get to know some of the amazing individuals working across our different countries and departments. So we’re introducing a new blog series, featuring profiles and interviews of team members across the nine countries where we operate.

In our first blog post in the series, meet two members of our Fumba clean cooking team. Fenix Fumba is a startup within Fenix focused on developing a pioneering, pay-as-you-go LPG (liquified petroleum gas) cookstove, designed to make clean cooking accessible and affordable for low-income customers. Keep reading to learn more about Anand and Claire’s work on Fenix Fumba, as well as what they enjoy about the Fenix team!

Anand Nandanan, Electrical Engineer

“At Fenix, I am learning something new every single day. And I love the idea of designing something that has a positive impact.”

What are you doing within the Fenix team?

I am an electrical engineer in the Fumba team. That means I am responsible for developing the hardware of the electronic side. The two main things I do are designing circuit boards, those green little things that you see when you break down electronics, and developing codes and programming for those designs. So my work essentially contributes towards the engineering efforts in making our controllers. I am also supporting other aspects of engineering such as manufacturing.

From your perspective, what is Fumba bringing to customers?

I think the main thing is affordability. There are also other socio-economic factors like reducing pollution as the major problem with charcoal and firewood is that it is not clean. It will also help decrease the time spent by women collecting firewood; this will free some time for women but also reduce deforestation.

What do you like about your work?

I do like playing around with hardware. You have so much flexibility. You can create what you want if you have enough time to do it. What I like at Fenix is that I am learning something new every single day. And I love the idea of designing something that has a positive impact. We are delivering something that is helping people, the environment…

Uganda has always been my home. I lived in Uganda pretty much my whole life. So after studying electrical engineering in London, I was excited to come back here. I knew a lot about Fenix. When I saw a job opening for an electrical engineer, I was confused because I would never imagine electrical engineering to happen in Uganda, so I jumped on it.

What makes Fenix a special place to work?

Fenix is one very open company. I don’t know of any company that is that open, lively and young. Here you can see the CEO and discuss freely with him. It is very very value-oriented.

Where do you see Fumba in the future?

I would say that within the 5 years or so, we will be operating in all the Fenix countries. I also hope to see our product to expand to rural areas. They are going to be challenges to solve, especially in terms of logistics, but I hope that we get there.

Claire Ayuro, Sales Support Associate for Clean Cooking

“Working at Fenix is about having a passion for what you do. I love what I do right now and I am always eager to learn more and make our work better for our customers.”

What are you doing within the Fenix team?

My role is to develop the sales of Fumba and support our customers. This involves getting the customers on board, making sure they are getting a very good experience and resolving their issues in a timely manner. I also do the delivery and the installation of the device at home and check that the device is well and safely installed. I am at the front line with the customers, so I am making sure to get their feedback and share them with the rest of the team so we can always make our product better.

What do you like about your work?

What I love to do in my role is interacting with customers and seeing them excited when they learn about our product. It is something completely new for them and they have a lot of questions. My role is very exciting! I get to meet new people and go to new places every day!

From your perspective, what is Fumba bringing to the customers?

It is clean and affordable. With Fumba, people can cook a meal with gas for less than $1, whereas a gas cylinder costs about $30 to refill. And we also make it convenient for the customers: they don’t have to go through the complications of going to the refill station as we are delivering and installing the cylinder. Finally, it is safe as the cylinder can lock itself. Customers are not scared anymore to have gas at home.

What do you like about working at Fenix?

I started in 2015 as a CSR [call center representative] and Fenix has given me the opportunity to grow. I’ve learnt a lot over the years, including about LPG [liquified petroleum gas]. Here you have your target to meet, you have to go the extra mile. Working at Fenix is about having a passion for what you do. I love what I do right now and I am always eager to learn more and make our work better for our customers. All that makes me excited. When I come to work in the morning I have one thing in mind: I want to see the customer smiling.

What makes Fenix different?

Our culture. When you get into Fenix, starting from the gate, people will welcome you. We make people feel at home, including our customers. A customer would come furious because his unit is not working but I would understand him, listen to him and try my best to fix his problem. From the beginning, giving an exceptional customer service has been part of the culture of the company. Everyone is focused on the customers. That is definitely unique.
